Helaine Costello and Janette Riggs, co-convenors of WAVE SA, set out to make 2010 a year of raising awareness of WAVE in SA and increasing membership and involvement by women, in campaigns such as the upcoming postcard campaign. They timed their 2nd dinner ( June 1st) to coincide with the launch of the postcard campaign. We invited a guest speaker, Frances Bedford MP, who will be speaking about Muriel Matters (1877 - 1969) a suffragist, lecturer, journalist, educator, actress and elocutionist. Her activism is an inspiration to us all! We booked a Thai restaurant out for the night and can have up to 40 attend. Please contact Helaine Costello or Janette Riggs for more information and to rsvp. It’s our intention to hold at least 4 dinners this year. It’s a great year, especially with the upcoming election, to increase our voice in South Australia. We started out the year with a stand at the International Women’s Day Breakfast ; a huge event in Adelaide with 2300 women in attendance! Helaine and Janette at International Women’s Day breakfast 2010 Next, we initiated a series of dinners and invited women who: · are/ have been a member, or expressed interest in WAVE; · want to connect/network with other women working/ studying in the VET sector; · are concerned about the continuing disadvantage experienced by women in the workplace and the VET sector; to socialise, network and politicise. Our first dinner (March) was very successful. We held it at the Regency TAFE hotel school and 15 women came. Although the venue was a bit too noisy for speeches, we were able to...SA – Helaine Costello & Janette Riggs

Elizabeth 5112 ph: 8207 9745 mobile: 0429565730 helaine.costello@tafesa.edu.au Helaine Costello is a lecturer and coordinator of Certificates II, III ,IV in Women's Education at the Elizabeth Campus of TAFE SA. I have worked in TAFE for 25 years and in Women's Education for most of that time. The work that WAVE has done in conjunction with Security 4 Women has been extremely useful to our program both as a teaching resource, and as support for the continuation of Women's Education courses. We were able to use research conducted by WAVE as support for our application to operate under Special Measures within the EO Act. This enables us to remain a course for women only. (see Lifelong Learning: Work related education and training. Meeting the needs of Australian women) All of this, of course, has had an impact on the lives of many women in South Australia and makes WAVE a very important organization now and into the future. As co convenor of WAVE SA I look forward to continue making 'waves' about women and education.
