WAVE Statement on new VET Student Loans Bills 2016

WAVE acknowledges the work undertaken by a range of Federal MPs and Senators to improve the VET Student Loans Bills, agreed to by Federal Parliament on 1 December 2016.

However it is unfortunate that these three Bills needed to be rushed through Parliament at the last minute so that they could be implemented from 1 January 2017. Given the catastrophe of VET FEE-HELP and the number of students who remain stranded, many of them women and girls, due to the actions of some unscrupulous private providers, a replacement Bill required careful consideration and full consultation.  What the VET sector does not need is another piece of poor public policy, due to the actions of governments not concerned about quality vocational education and training, and the best educational opportunities for learners.
